What is Garda Vetting in Ireland?

If you’re applying for a course, job, or volunteer role that involves working with children or vulnerable adults in Ireland, you may be asked to complete Garda Vetting. But what exactly does that mean — and how does the process work?

This guide explains everything you need to know about Garda Vetting, who needs it, and how CMIT can help you with the application process.

What is Garda Vetting?

Garda Vetting is a background check carried out by the National Vetting Bureau (NVB) of An Garda Síochána. Its purpose is to ensure that individuals working or volunteering with vulnerable people are suitable for their roles and do not pose a risk to others.

The vetting process involves checking whether an individual has a criminal record or specified information that may be relevant to the position applied for.

Who Needs Garda Vetting?

You will need Garda Vetting if you are applying for work, training, or voluntary activities that involve regular contact with children or vulnerable adults.

This includes roles in sectors such as:

  • Education and childcare

  • Healthcare and social care

  • Youth and sports organisations

  • Certain work placements or professional training

Even if you are a student on placement, vetting may be required before you can begin your practical training.

How Does the Garda Vetting Process Work?

The process is straightforward but must be completed carefully:

  1. You complete a Garda Vetting Invitation Form (NVB1).
This form collects your personal details, which are used to begin the vetting process.

  2. The authorised organisation (e.g. CMIT) submits your details to the National Vetting Bureau.
You’ll then receive an email invitation from the NVB with a link to complete your online vetting application.

  3. You complete your online form.
This includes confirming your address history and identity details.

  4. The National Vetting Bureau reviews your record.
If no issues are found, a vetting disclosure is issued to the requesting organisation (not directly to you).

The process usually takes a few days to a few weeks, depending on the volume of applications being processed.

How Long Does Garda Vetting Last?

There is no official expiry date for Garda Vetting in Ireland, but most employers, training providers, and placement organisations require up-to-date vetting — typically completed within the last three years.

If you change roles, employers, or start a new course involving placements, you will likely need to complete a new vetting application.

What Information is Shared?

The vetting disclosure may include:

  • Details of criminal convictions in Ireland or abroad

  • Specified information from An Garda Síochána (if relevant to the role)

  • Confirmation if no record is found

All information is handled in line with data protection laws and is shared only with authorised organisations.

CMIT Can Apply for Garda Vetting on Your Behalf

If you are enrolling in a CMIT course that requires Garda Vetting, CMIT can submit the application on your behalf. This makes the process quicker and easier for you — ensuring all documentation is handled correctly and securely.
