Mental Health (FETAC Level 6) Distance Learning and eLearning Courses


Course Details

This fully recognised qualification is designed for a broad spectrum of health care workers who would benefit from a greater understanding of Mental Health. This course covers topics such as stress, phobias, anxiety, eating disorders, and schizophrenia among others - all conditions under the topic mental health.

Whether you are an experienced mental health care worker or new to the industry caring for clients or patients in a work environment, we believe that this learning programme will assist you with your personal development. This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at work, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

  • Positive supports in the community which promote
  • Promoting positive mental health (yoga, pilates, relaxation, reiki, reflexology, massage, support groups, social activities, etc.)

 

Unit 2 - Realities of Mental Illness

  • Historical context and myths associated with mental illness
  • Major classifications of mental illness
  • Various models used in understanding mental illness (environmental, chemical, social, cultural, genetic or combinations)
  • The impact of mental illness on the person and society
  • The symptoms and characteristics of mental illness
  • Legal/ethical/moral issues associated with mental illness

 

Unit 3 - Intervention and Treatment Approaches

  • Treatment approaches and their application. (Medication, psychotherapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, counselling, healing communities, systemic interventions etc.)
  • The advantages and disadvantages of each modality listed above.
  • The role of the relevant associated mental health professionals. (GP, CPN, psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellor, social worker, rehabilitation professionals, occupational therapists etc.)
  • Ongoing interventions available in the community for people with enduring mental health difficulties. (day centres, sheltered workshops, resource centres, rehabilitation training programmes, supported employment, sheltered housing etc.)

 

Unit 4 - Recovery and Advocacy

  • Understand the features of recovery
  • The recovery process
  • The recovery movement in Ireland
  • The key issues relating to current legislation



Who should complete this course?


  • Health care workers, mental health carers, social care workers, those working with people with intellectual disabilities, day centre workers, and those working in sheltered workshops, resource centres, sheltered housing, and rehabilitation training programmes. Other roles who would benefit from this course include Youth workers, Gardai, Nurses, Prison officers, Teachers, and HR Professionals.
  • People who wish to gain a professional qualification in the subject matter by home study distance learning.


Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

  • Level 5 Certificate, Leaving Cert (or equivalent) and/or relevant work and life experience.
  • Learners must be working in a role where there is an opportunity to put their learning into practice and reflect on it.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • A basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course.

Assessment

  • This award is assessed through a series of assessments, which are submitted by the student. This includes a Learner Record, and a Project (which includes a presentation).
  • As part of our quality assurance, student assessment work will be marked by an Internal Assessor, then checked by an Internal Verifier and an independent FETAC External Authenticator.


Transfer and Progression to Further Studies

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. It is not currently a component of a FETAC major award. For more details contact us.


Accreditation

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component certificate in Mental Health Awareness (L32490).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. CMIT is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
  • Please note that there is a EUR60 fee payable for administration, moderation and certification.

I really feel by doing this course i will be able to carry out my job more effectively and efficiently and feel that i might understand how important my role is to those with mental health problems. I am confident that the new knowledge i have from the course with help me in dealing with mentally ill clients and also give them a helping hand with helping them to overcome their problems or at least try manage them.
