You will find the contents of this course beneficial whether you are a coach, official, teacher, physiotherapist, sports trainer, or if you are just using the skills described in this course to enhance your own personal performance. All athletes, no matter what their area of expertise want to make the most of their hard work and talent by performing to the best of their ability. There are three factors that influence sporting ability;

  • Technical proficiency
  • Fitness
  • Mental skills

As such the following extract is included in order for the reader to gain an impression of the type of work a sport and exercise psychologist undertakes: ‘The application of psychology to sport and exercise settings is a relatively new field which is rapidly developing and expanding.  This branch of psychology is concerned with understanding the behaviour, mental processes, and well-being of people who are involved in sport and exercise.  Practitioners typically specialise in either the sport or exercise branches, though some work equally in both fields.
