Course Details

This journalism course is designed to provide a thorough training in all aspects of journalist features writing, and in varied types of feature. It is also intended that students will submit features in a freelance journalist capacity. The course covers aspects such as: news features, profiles, specialist features (such as film and music reviews) and consumer features. Students receive a course manual, assignments and studyguide, plus tutor support.

Prerequisites

  • Students must have completed a FETAC Level 5 certificate in Print Journalism or equivalent e.g Level 6 in News Writing for Print or NCFE Level 3 in Journalism and Fiction Writing.
  • Students must be fluent in English.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • Basic working knowledge of computers is required to do the course.


Assessment

  • This course is assessed through a collection of work. This will require students to write a news feature article, a profile of a prominent Irish figure or organisation and a feature article on a specialist area / consumer feature.
  • All work submitted must be your own work. There is no exam with this course.
  • As part of our quality assurance, student assessment work will be marked by an Internal Assessor, then checked by an Internal Verifier and an independent FETAC External Authenticator.


Progression to Further Studies

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards the FETAC Advanced Certificate in Media Production programme (Ref. EMPRO).


Accreditation

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 Certificate in Feature Writing for Print (N32737) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. CMIT is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
  • Please note that there is a EUR60 fee payable for administration, moderation and certification.
